Asmara International Airport, the largest airport in Eritrea, has all the charms of history woven into its contemporary relevance. Initially called 'Aeroporto di Gura' when built by Italian colonial authorities in 1922, it served as the main military airport in the region. It didn't take long before the airport expanded its wings, quite literally, to civilian and commercial flights, creating memorable records along the way. Most notably, in 1935, when Ala Littoria, an Italian airline, launched a commercial route that stretched from Asmara to Mogadishu – a feat that was unheard of in its time. Today, the airport stands as an international gateway to the nation, delivering scheduled regular services that cater exceptionally well to the travel-savvy. Due to its size restriction, there are practical limitations on the larger aircraft such as A380, MD-11 or 747. However, this is a minor deviation and larger aircraft can utilise the Massawa International Airport alternatively. Regardless, the Asmara International Airport remains a testament to Eritrea's journey from its past to its present.
