As one of the most northerly Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, Anguilla boasts a rich and varied history. Originally named Malliouhana by its native Arawak inhabitants before being rechristened as "Anguilla" – Italian for "eel" – by Europeans who were struck by the island's shape, Anguilla has borne witness to diverse waves of settlers and colonisers for centuries, ranging from the Indigenous peoples of South America to European powers like the Dutch West India Company and the British Empire.
Slavery, rebellion, and revolution have all left their mark on Anguilla's history, molding it into the distinct British Crown colony it is today. Characterised by ecologically important coral reefs, limestone landscapes, and pristine beaches, Anguilla is a melting pot of traditions, with English-speaking communities influenced by the island's unique Creole language and culture. Educational institutions, such as the Saint James School of Medicine and the University of the West Indies, illustrate the island's commitment to providing its population with educational opportunities alongside its booming tourism and offshore financial industries.
When to visit Anguilla
The best time to visit Anguilla is from February to April when rainfall is lowest and temperatures hover in the delightful mid-80s Fahrenheit. Conversely, travellers should steer clear of August through December when the risk of rain is highest. Summer months, however, offer a quieter and more affordable time to visit, with excellent deals abound and superb conditions for scuba diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.
Peak season runs from mid-December to mid-April, with high tourist numbers and limited availability at popular hotels. To experience some of Anguilla's key cultural events, visit during the Moonsplash Festival, Festival Del Mar, Anguilla Regatta, Anguilla Summer Festival or Carnival, taking place throughout the year.
