Set in the heart of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province, Ushuaia stakes its claim as the world's most southern city. Settled on Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego's southern coast, with the waters of the Beagle Channel at its doorstep, it is a city steeped in history and splendour. The city was established in 1884 alongside the shores of the Beagle Channel, whose name in the native Yaghan language, Ushuaia, poetically translates to "deep bay" or "bay to background".

The city's roots are entwined with the Yaghan and Selk'nam indigenous peoples, along with a rich historical connection to British missionaries and explorers. The first European to call this place home was British missionary Waite Hockin Stirling, who arrived in 1869. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Argentine government built a prison in Ushuaia, driving an increase in population and establishing sovereignty over Tierra del Fuego. The prison, which operated until 1947, now serves as the Museo Maritimo de Ushuaia.
