Brasília, the federal heart of Brazil, is not only the seat of government for the Federal District but a performance in modernist ambition. Founded in 1960 by President Juscelino Kubitschek, the city represents the extraordinary vision of architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer and the urban planner Joaquim Cardozo. Their design stratified the city based on specified sectors, creating a unique cityscape formulated from numbered blocks.
Ranked highly in GDP per capita amongst Latin American cities, Brasília has emerged as a significant player on the international stage, serving as the base for all three branches of Brazil's federal government and 124 foreign embassies. It's connected globally via its bustling international airport, facilitating millions each year as they delve into the deep, modernist heart of Latin America's third-most populous city.
This planned city, despite not being a legal municipality like other Brazilian cities, has grown larger and more prosperous beyond its originally planned area, known as Plano Piloto. Today, Brasília cradles a population exceeding 2.4 million while encompassing a multinational tapestry of cultures and ethnicities, reflecting the diversity that Brazil prides itself on. Developing from an ambitious plan in the 1820s to realisation in the late 1950s, and standing today as a testament to the progression of modern society, Brasília remains a symbolic emblem of Brazilian modernity.
When to visit Brasilia
Due to Brasília's tropical savanna climate, there are definite periods that prove more comfortable for visiting. While the city experiences a distinct rainy season from October to April, it's best to consider visiting in May and June, when the weather is generally more agreeable, and an eruption of blooming flora enhances the city's already enchanting scenery.
However, you may wish to avoid the sweltering heat of July, August and September. The rain-soaked months from November to February may not be the most favourable either. If you fancy a gamble, October could be beneficial, given its typically mild weather, but bear in mind it's liable to change annually. No matter when you plan to visit, be assured, an extensive array of lovely accommodation options await you— from the five-star grandeur of Kubischek Plaza to the affordable elegance of the Melia Brasilia and the Parthenon Lider Flat.
