Known officially as the Republic of India, this fascinating nation sits in South Asia, surrounded by the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal. As the seventh-largest country globally, India carries the title of the world's most populous democracy, a melting pot of diverse human genetics second only to Africa.

The echoes of its complex history can be seen in its architecture, heard in its multitude of languages, and tasted in its cuisine. From the rise and fall of the Maurya and Gupta Empires, the era of the Mughal Empire, to British colonisation, and finally, independence leading to a federal republic in 1950, each epoch has left indelible marks on its landscape and psyche.

India today is a rapidly developing nation, teetering between the familiar and the foreign, the traditional and the innovative. Globally influential through its movies, music, and spiritual teachings, it is also a major economy with a thriving space program. Despite challenges, India endears and enthralls, inviting you to experience its rich heritage, diverse cultures, and breathtaking landscapes.

When to visit India

Choosing when to visit India is largely dependent on the weather and what you hope to see and do during your stay. Generally, the best window for travel is between October and March, when much of the country enjoys warm, sunny days and dry weather. Ventures to the northern region of Ladakh, however, are best undertaken between June and September.

The southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu are most appealing from November onward, after the sometimes torrential monsoon season ends. Festivals are a significant part of Indian culture, and scheduling your visit around these can make your journey even more memorable. Visit in March for the joyous paint-throwing Holi festival, or November for the sparkling lights of Diwali and the unique spectacle of the Pushkar Camel Fair.
