Learn more about hotels in Mandalay

Established in 1857 by King Mindon, Mandalay served as the royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty before falling to the British Empire in 1885. The city, officially named Yadanarbon or "City of Gems", has endured substantial change throughout the years, including destruction during World War II and significant immigration from China. Today, Mandalay is considered the economic and cultural heartland of Upper Myanmar.

Despite the rise of Naypyidaw as the country's capital, Mandalay remains a core commercial, educational, and health centre, and was ranked as the fifth ASEAN city in the process of becoming a 'smart city' in 2018. Named after Mandalay Hill, the city’s busy streets hum with the vibrant bustle of bicycles and motorcycles, its air rich with the aromatic mingling of Burmese spices.

When to visit Mandalay

The city welcomes visitors all year round, but each season in Mandalay offers a unique experience. The dry season from November through February sees the city at its vibrant best and is typically the most favoured by tourists. However, it is advised to book your accommodation in advance due to the spike in visitor numbers.

The hot season between March and April, can be challenging due to high temperatures, so it’s a good idea to plan indoor activities during midday. The rainy season from May to October brings abundant rainfall, but does not dampen the city’s spirits. Do be mindful, however, that heavy downpours may affect outdoor plans and do consider the dengue fever risk in these months. Regardless of when your travels bring you to Mandalay, each season offers its own signature charm.
