Sitting pretty against the Gulf of Oman, Muscat, with its approximate population of 1.4 million, spans an area of about 3,500 km^2 and comprises six provinces known locally as wilayats. Known as a crucial trading port between the East and the West since the early 1st century CE, the city has been under the rule of various native tribes and foreign powers, such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.
Thanks to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who ascended the throne in 1970, Muscat has seen substantial developments and progress, becoming a Beta-Global City. With a strong economy primarily powered by trade, petroleum, and porting, the city is rich in history and culture. The origin of the name 'Muscat' is subject to dispute, with theories suggesting Arabic or Old Persian roots.
Historical relics, such as burial sites dating back to around 6,000 BCE, offer evidence of early communal activity around the region. Muscat – a testament to Oman's proud history, swept by the tides of empires and sultanates, yet maintaining its unique cultural heritage.
When to visit Muscat
The best time for a delightful visit to Muscat is between October and March. During these months, the heat retreats to make way for comfortably pleasant temperatures, between 15°C (60°F) to 30°C (85°F), with a scarce chance of rainfall. The much-celebrated Muscat Festival in January is a significant highlight, drawing tourists from around the globe to indulge in a sensational cultural extravaganza.
Alternatively, the shoulder season, from April to May, offers fewer crowds and more budget-friendly accommodation and tour options. If captivating wildlife appeals to you, a September visit to the nearby Ras Al Jinz Beach could reward with the sight of green sea turtles laying their eggs - a spectacle not to be missed.
