Our Top Hotels
A royal endeavor that still puzzles and impresses historians and architects today, Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress built under the rule of King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. Selected for its strategic position and natural defences, this mountainous capital was transformed into a splendid palace and fortress adorned with remarkable frescoes that, today, are partially preserved, adding a stroke of luminescent art throughout the historic site.
In addition to the royal palace, Sigiriya boasts an elaborately designed city at the base of the rock. The landscape was crafted with the utmost precision, featuring a labyrinth of terraced and water-filled gardens carefully positioned amid monumental boulders. One of the most fascinating features to be found at the site is certainly the "mirror wall". Once polished to a high shine, this wall is now home to verses written by visitors, some dating back to the 8th century. Finally, the journey up to the fortress is framed by a magnificently designed "Lion Gate", which offers an imposing welcome to the palace above.
However, Sigiriya's story unfolds even further back than King Kashyapa's time. Indeed, the surrounding area lays claim to evidence of human habitation dating as far back as the Mesolithic Period. The fusion of this ancient habitat, the impressive urban planning of King Kashyapa's reign, and later Buddhist monastic settlements, gives Sigiriya a rich, eclectic character that tinges every corner of the site.
When to visit Sigiriya
Charted as a World Heritage treasure by UNESCO, Sigiriya represents a journey into history's annals, best embarked upon from January to April, when the weather offers a moderate climate convenient for extensive exploration and picture-perfect vistas to photograph. During these months, day trips to the rock site in the early morning (around 7am) or late afternoon prove to be both less crowded and aesthetically captivating, with softer lighting conditions that provide breathtaking views of the Sri Lankan landscape.
Travellers should generally avoid the wet months of October to December, as the driest period between May and August makes for the most pleasant expedition. Ascending the rock during this time reveals Sigiriya in all its glory, manifesting the grandeur of ancient urban planning and the undeniable aura of the centuries-long Sri Lankan cultural continuum.
