Claiming its roots back in 1834, the district of Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, positioned on the northern part of the Malay Peninsula, eventually evolved into Thailand's pioneer beach resort. Located a convenient 199 kilometres from Bangkok, the region has steadily blossomed, expanding over an impressive 911 square kilometers and providing a sanctum for nearly 66,000 residents.

The tranquil sandy beaches, once known as Samo Riang or 'rows of rocks' to its first farmers, have witnessed the seamless blend of history with hospitality. From the opening of the alluring Railway Hotel in 1921 that sparked a wave of aristocratic visitors, to King Prajadhipok’s ‘far from worries’ Summer Palace (Klai Kang Won), Hua Hin has rightfully earned its fame as a coastal retreat over the decades, attracting a rising number of Thai and foreign visitors each year.

Despite a traumatic incident of bomb blasts in 2016 which led to an increased level of security, Hua Hin remains a beacon of serenity. The town is segmented into seven neatly organised sub-districts and 63 villages, keeping it easy to navigate for visitors. The virginity of the Gulf of Thailand's water off Hua Hin’s coast was rated 'good to fair' by the Pollution Control Department in 2016, adding a notch in its cap.

When to visit Hua Hin

For those considering visiting this sun-soaked oasis, Hua Hin boasts a tropical savanna climate with high temperatures across the year, with a little dance of seasonal changes. The dry season extends from December to April, making it an ideal winter escape for those seeking solace from the chilly winds of the North. Following this, the monsoons grace the district from May till November, lending a surreal beauty to the landscape.

Travel is a breeze, with Hua Hin being connected by well-trodden road, rail, and sea routes. The district’s main railway station, Hua Hin Railway Station, is a convenient stop to alight. Plans for double tracks from Bangkok are also in the pipeline, promising to cut down the travel time considerably. Moreover, Hua Hin’s own airport connects it to other amazing Thai spots like Chiang Mai and plans are on foot to upgrade this terminal to accommodate the influx of annual travellers. So come rain or shine, Hua Hin waits with open arms to greet you.
