Our Top Hotels
Banbridge, on the banks of the River Bann, began as a coaching stop on the bustling road between Belfast and Dublin. The town, which was built around a bridge over the river in 1712, grew and flourished due to the thriving Irish linen industry. Steeped in history, Banbridge was at the centre of the 'Linen Homelands' with 26 bleach greens along the Bann in 1772. The town continues to play host to several notable linen producers, such as Thomas Ferguson & Co and John England Irish Linen.
The picturesque main street of Banbridge, which rises to a steep hill before levelling out, offers visitors a unique and characterful setting. Notably, an underpass known as "The Cut" was constructed in 1834 to provide respite to horses carrying heavy loads uphill. Banbridge's intriguing past also includes its connection to the struggle between William III and James II, and the subsequent violence emanating from the Irish War of Independence and partition.
When to visit Banbridge
The ideal time to visit Banbridge is during the warmer months of June, July, and August - perfect for family outings and exploring nearby attractions. April and September are less rainy, offering a pleasant climate for taking in the stunning landscapes. For budget-conscious travellers, consider visiting in spring or autumn when deals on accommodations may be more affordable. Winter travellers will find October notably offers the lowest hotel prices, although the weather may not be as conducive to outdoor activities.
