Located 17 miles east of Lincoln, Horncastle is a bastion of British history. Once possibly known as Banovallum during Roman times, this town brims with archaeological evidence of its ancient roots, like the section of Roman walls indicating the River Bain as a primary route of access. Its name took shape under the Saxons, metamorphosing to the present-day 'Horncastle' from 'Hyrnecastre'.
Marked in the Domesday Book of 1086, Horncastle features a rich past celebrated in landmarks such as the 13th century Anglican parish church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin. Alongside that, the Stanhope Memorial and the Old Court House, both Grade II listed buildings, add a charm to town's architecture. The Battle of Winceby, fought near Horncastle, played a pivotal role in the English Civil War, securing Lincolnshire for Parliament.
Once brimming with activity like cockfighting and bull-baiting – outlawed after 1835 – Horncastle's history also witnesses it as a hub for antique trading and the August horse fair that ended after World War II. Today, you'll find several schools and a variety of sports facilities, and while the local railway station closed in the 1980s, the town remains well-linked by major Lincolnshire roads and the InterConnect rural bus service.
When to visit Horncastle
Horncastle shines brightest in the warmer months of June through September when the town basks in the lovely English summer. These are perfect months to leisurely explore the town, relish in a picnic by the River Bain or indulge in local sports activities. Reasonable rainfall is experienced in April, March, and September, enhancing the natural greenery and painting a scenic charm.
Tourism tends to slow down in winter months from December through February when Horncastle experiences the cold and higher rainfall. Yet, if you enjoy cosy indoor activities and serene, less crowded spaces, winter might be an ideal time to explore Horncastle's indoors, like its antique shops and local cafés. As of October 2019, Horncastle remains a safe and welcoming town for tourists, making it a great year-round destination.
