With its strategic geographical perch on a spur projecting into the River Mersey, Runcorn has flourished throughout the centuries, beginning as a fortification against Viking invasions, and evolving into a promising port town during the Industrial Revolution. The grandeur of the Augustinian abbey, established in 1115, continues to echo Runcorn's early history, while the town's growth as a New Town in 1964 signifies its modernisation and expansion.
Runcorn has seen epochs of growth and transformation. It thrived as a health resort in the late 18th and early 19th centuries before industrialisation took precedence. It developed significance in shipbuilding, engineering, chemical manufacturing, tanning, and sandstone quarrying, later shifting to light industry and distribution centres as the tanning and chemical industries declined.
The town is notable for its role in World War II as a mustard gas production site, although, fortunately, it remained relatively unscathed from bombing. Following its designation as a New Town, it experienced immense growth, leading to the creation of unique housing designs, industrial areas and a buzzing town centre attractively dubbed "Shopping City". Now part of the Liverpool City Region, it upholds its own local authority, the Halton Borough Council, and is split into nine electoral constituencies.
