The city of Matera is a real marvel, etched in the region of Basilicata, Southern Italy. It boasts a rich history dating back to the Palaeolithic period, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied settlements. Dominating the cityscape is the rock-cut urban core, known as the Sassi, composed of two central districts, Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, carved into the limestone cliffs.

The 16th century saw the public life of Matera step outside the city walls to the Piazza Sedile in the sprawling plane, known as the Piano, marking a significant expansion. Throughout the years, Matera saw government enforcement of relocation from the Sassi for modernization, only to witness a restoration and reoccupation boom in the 80s.

Matera's rebirth and rich heritage led to the establishment as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, earning the moniker, the "underground city". Matera continued its reputation for distinction by becoming a European Capital of Culture in 2019.

The remarkable morphology of Matera is amplified by unique architectural highlights, including rupestrian churches such as the Matera Cathedral and San Pietro Caveoso, carved into the rock. Amazingly, Matera's water systems, with cisterns and water channels, have stood the test of time, paying tribute to human ingenuity.
